Why would I give Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED to my horse?
You would give Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED to your horse to support and protect their gastric health, particularly during periods of stress, intense work, or changes in routine or environment.
Horses are naturally prone to gastric discomfort due to continuous acid production and modern management practices such as stabling, travel, competition, and meal-based feeding. These factors can increase acid exposure in the stomach, especially in both the squamous (upper) and glandular (lower) regions, potentially leading to irritation or damage.
Pectigus ADVANCED is carefully formulated to help buffer excess stomach acid, form a protective barrier on the stomach lining, support natural healing of the gut, and encourage a healthy balance of gut bacteria. It includes key ingredients such as calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, seaweed extracts, amino acids like glutamine peptides and threonine, and prebiotics like FOS.
This makes it an ideal choice for horses in hard work, those recovering from gastric upset, or simply needing additional support for long-term digestive health and comfort. With consistent use, Pectigus ADVANCED can help your horse stay healthy, comfortable, and better able to perform.
As a vet would you recommend Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED?
Yes — as a veterinary-formulated gastric support supplement, Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED is something we would recommend in appropriate cases. It’s designed to help manage and maintain gastric health in horses and foals, particularly when they are under stress from intense training, travel, changes in routine, or competition.
Its comprehensive formula targets both the squamous and glandular regions of the stomach — combining buffering agents, protective compounds, and essential amino acids that support mucosal repair and promote a healthy digestive environment. It also contains prebiotics to encourage beneficial gut flora. Pectigus ADVANCED is palatable, competition-safe, and suitable for both short-term and long-term use.
However, it’s important to note that this product does not replace veterinary-prescribed medication used to treat diagnosed gastric ulcers. If you suspect your horse may be suffering from gastric ulcers or digestive discomfort, you should always speak to your vet first for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Used as part of a broader gastric health management plan — and under veterinary guidance — Pectigus ADVANCED can be a valuable tool in maintaining your horse’s comfort, wellbeing, and performance.
Are there any horses that shouldn’t take Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED?
Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED is generally safe for most horses and foals when used as directed. However, as with any supplement, there are some important considerations. It should not be given to horses with known allergies or sensitivities to any of the ingredients in the product.
If your horse has a specific medical condition or is currently on veterinary-prescribed medication, especially for gastric or digestive issues, it’s essential to consult your vet before starting Pectigus ADVANCED. Additionally, while the product is safe for both adult horses and foals, it’s always best to follow recommended dosages and feeding instructions carefully to avoid any digestive upset. If you have any doubts about suitability—such as pregnancy, lactation, or pre-existing health conditions—discuss these with your vet before use.
What are the main benefits to Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED?
Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED provides comprehensive support for your horse’s gastric health, helping with both prevention and ongoing maintenance. Its effective acid-buffering ingredients, including calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide, help neutralise excess stomach acid and reduce irritation in both the squamous and glandular regions of the stomach. The formula also contains seaweed extracts and pectin-lecithin complexes that form a soothing, protective coating on the stomach lining, guarding against acid damage. Additionally, amino acids like glutamine peptides and threonine support the repair and maintenance of the gastrointestinal mucosa, promoting healing and overall gut integrity. The inclusion of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) encourages the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, contributing to a balanced digestive environment. Delivered in a palatable pelleted form, it is easy to feed and well accepted by horses.
Importantly, it is competition-safe for use in the UK, making it suitable for active and performance animals. Together, these benefits help maintain digestive comfort, reduce the risk of gastric discomfort or ulcers, and support your horse’s overall well-being and performance.
Should I give my horse Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED, even if my horse hasn’t been diagnosed with digestive issues?
Yes, Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED can be used proactively to support your horse’s gastric health, even if they haven’t been formally diagnosed with digestive problems. Horses are naturally susceptible to gastric irritation and ulcers due to their digestive physiology and the stresses of modern management—such as training, stabling, travel, and competition—which can all increase the risk of stomach discomfort.
Using Pectigus ADVANCED as a preventive supplement can help maintain a healthy stomach environment, buffer excess acid, and support the integrity of the gut lining before problems develop. Many horse owners find it useful as part of a long-term gastric health strategy, especially for horses in regular work or those exposed to stressors that may affect digestion.
However, if you notice any signs of discomfort, changes in behaviour, or suspect your horse may have gastric ulcers, it’s important to consult your veterinarian for diagnosis and appropriate treatment. While Pectigus ADVANCED is a valuable support product, it does not replace veterinary-prescribed medication for treating ulcers.
What is Calcium Carbonate & Magnesium Hydroxide and why is it good for my horses health?
Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Hydroxide are commonly used antacid agents that help manage stomach acidity. In horses, these compounds work by neutralising excess gastric acid, which can cause irritation or damage to the sensitive lining of the stomach. Horses produce stomach acid continuously, but unlike humans, they don’t produce saliva during eating to buffer that acid as effectively. This can lead to periods where the stomach becomes overly acidic, increasing the risk of discomfort, inflammation, and ulcers. Calcium Carbonate acts as a fast-acting buffer, quickly raising the pH (reducing acidity) in the stomach, while Magnesium Hydroxide provides a gentler, longer-lasting buffering effect. Together, they help maintain a more balanced and less corrosive stomach environment.
By reducing excess acid, these ingredients help protect both the squamous (upper) and glandular (lower) areas of the horse’s stomach, reducing the risk of gastric irritation and ulcers, and supporting overall digestive comfort and health.
What is Pectizone and why is it good for my horse's health?
Pectizone® is a specially formulated blend of pectin, lecithin, and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) designed to support and protect your horse’s stomach lining. Pectin is a natural fiber that helps form a gentle, protective barrier over the stomach lining, shielding it from the harsh effects of stomach acid, especially in the sensitive squamous region. Lecithin, a phospholipid, works alongside pectin to strengthen this protective coating and maintain the integrity of the gut lining. Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) act as prebiotics, encouraging the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. A healthy balance of gut microflora helps support proper digestion and can reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Together, these components help soothe, protect, and maintain a healthy stomach environment, reducing the risk of irritation and ulcers while promoting overall digestive health and comfort.
What is Sodium Alginate and why is it good for my horse's health?
Sodium Alginate is a natural substance extracted from brown seaweed. In horse supplements, it acts as a protective agent for the stomach lining. When it comes into contact with the acidic environment of the stomach, sodium alginate forms a gel-like barrier that sits on top of the stomach contents. This barrier helps shield the stomach lining from the corrosive effects of stomach acid, reducing irritation and discomfort, particularly in the sensitive squamous and glandular regions. By forming this protective layer, sodium alginate supports the healing of any existing damage and helps prevent further injury, promoting overall gastric health and comfort in horses—especially those under stress or prone to gastric ulcers.
What are Glutamine Peptides and why are they good for my horse's health?
Glutamine peptides are a highly absorbable form of the amino acid glutamine, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of the gastrointestinal tract. Glutamine is a key nutrient for the cells that line the stomach and intestines. It helps support the repair and regeneration of the gut lining, which can be damaged by acid, stress, or illness. By providing glutamine in peptide form, it’s more easily absorbed and utilized by the body, making it especially effective in supporting gut health. In horses, glutamine peptides help maintain the integrity and function of the digestive tract, promoting faster healing of any damaged tissues, reducing inflammation, and supporting overall digestive comfort. Including glutamine peptides in supplements like Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED supports your horse’s natural ability to maintain a healthy, resilient gut lining.
What is Threonine and why is it good for my horse's health?
Threonine is an essential amino acid, meaning horses cannot produce it themselves and must obtain it from their diet. It plays a vital role in maintaining overall health, particularly in supporting the structure and function of the digestive system. In the context of gut health, threonine is important for the production of mucins, which are key components of the protective mucus layer lining the stomach and intestines. This mucus layer acts as a barrier that shields the delicate gut lining from stomach acid and harmful substances. By supporting mucus production, threonine helps maintain the integrity of the gastrointestinal lining, promoting healing and protecting against damage from acid and inflammation. This makes it an important nutrient for horses prone to gastric discomfort or ulcers. In supplements like Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED, threonine works alongside other ingredients to promote a healthy, resilient digestive tract, supporting your horse’s comfort and wellbeing.
Can my horse take Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED if it is going to be officially competing?
Yes, Hestevard Pectigus ADVANCED is competition-safe and approved for use in horses participating in official events in the UK. It contains no banned substances and complies with relevant equine sport regulations, making it suitable for performance horses.
This means you can confidently use Pectigus ADVANCED to support your horse’s gastric health before, during, and after competition without risking positive doping tests or rule violations.
As always, it’s good practice to check the specific rules of your competition or governing body, but generally, this supplement is designed to be safe for active, competing horses.
